Eh sì, non sono più gli americani che hanno liberato l'europa dal nazismo, quei simpaticoni altruisti che abbiamo visto in tanti film sulla seconda guerra mondiale. Le abbiamo viste tutti le foto delle torture ai prigionieri in Iraq, una ripetizione di quanto accaduto in Afghanistan e a Guantanamo. Di queste foto colpisce sopratutto la presenza delle donne che hanno partecipato alle umliazioni inflitte ai prigionieri. E a capo della prigione di Abu Ghraib c'era proprio una donna, il generale Janis Karpinski, una riservista che nella vita civile fa la manager in una grande azienda e che, a vederla solo in fotografia, non vorresti mai fosse tua nonna.
La Casa Bianca ieri sera si è scusata. Qualche testa salterà, ma di sicuro non quella di Rumsfeld, i democratici amplificano per il loro tornaconto lo scandalo, ma in America cosa cambierà?
Il sadismo che trasuda da queste foto è solo generato (giustificato) dalla guerra, o parte da una degenerazione più generale e ampia della società americana? Noi europei resteremo a guardare, come sempre, un po' indignati un po' sorpresi, aspettando il prossimo film di Oliver Stone e lasciando che l'America continui ad occuparsi della gestione del mondo.
Forse non ha neanche tanto senso, ora come ora, protestare. Basterebbe cominciare a non comperare prodotti americani, l'unico modo per concretizzare l'indignazione e fargli capire che forse non appaiono più come i salvatori della libertà impersonati in tanti film da Gregory Peck o Robert Mitchum o Humphrey Bogart.
